Big Oil has a lot of influence on Capitol Hill – and nowhere is it more evident than in the current push to fast track dangerous fossil fuel projects.
We need Members of Congress to do everything they can to strip these dirty provisions from the debt ceiling deal.
Don’t Fall For These Polluter Giveaways
Manchin and the GOP may refer to these provisions as “permitting reform” but it’s really an all out assault on the health of our communities, our families, and our climate to help a handful of Big Oil CEOs.
The provisions they’ve jammed into the Fiscal Responsibility Act would limit the public’s ability to provide input on fossil fuel projects and other destructive developments that would harm the communities most burdened by pollution, while allowing corporate polluters to effectively rubber-stamp the projects they’re proposing.
Getting the public out of the way makes things a little bit easier for Big Oil, but we pay the price in unhealthy air and water, endangered wildlife, and unstable, dangerous oil and gas projects in our neighborhoods.
It’s no surprise that Senator Manchin has a lot to gain by attaching the Mountain Valley Pipeline to a must-pass debt ceiling bill. Manchin is Congress’ largest recipient of money from natural gas pipeline companies, raising three times as much from the industry in 2022 than any other lawmaker. And according to campaign finance disclosures, Mountain Valley Pipeline stakeholders have dramatically increased their contributions to Manchin in recent years.
Congress: Wipe Away Big Oil’s Influence
We need Members of Congress to wipe away Big Oil’s toxic influence and keep dirty polluter giveaways out of the debt ceiling bill.
We urge Congress to pass a clean debt ceiling bill free of unnecessary poison pill riders that would fast track projects like the Mountain Valley Pipeline, and harm disadvantaged communities, Tribal nations and Indigenous Peoples, working families, and our climate.
